This larger delta wing is a spin off of the 36" Avro Vulcan.
The 36" Avro was able to bungee so high and thermal so well
that I wanted to see if a larger delta would thermal even better.
The radio is shoved up to the nose. Note the split battery pack.
Another good method is to use a flat pack oriented so that a corner
points into the nose area. The antenna trails back from the RX. and
is wrapped around a thin piece of rectangular foam that is covered
with blue tape. You can see the outline if you look carefully.
This is a good view of the 5.5% foil I created for this wing.
It is a combination of a sort of lifting body foil that transitions
to a very thin airfoil with a slight reflex at the trailing edge.
I haven't bungeed it as high as the little one yet, but it definitely
thermals better. It is both faster and slower than the 36"
It's not quite as nimble, but it will still out maneuver anything
I have ever seen flying. The flight envelope is surprising. It can really
cover ground with a very flat glide ratio. It is very clean through the
air and retains energy very well until you do a couple of 90deg. turns
in succession. It will turn or change pitch 90deg. or more in less than a
2ft. radius at full speed! It can also be slowed to the point of almost
hovering in for landings. I was able to fly it past my truck, make a 180deg.
turn about 10ft. away, then fly it right in to the open camper door!
The 48" Delta Wing is available.
It is currently $55.00 including shipping in the U.S.
The kit includes wing cores, spars, elevons, rudder
and instructions. you will need pushrods,
contact cement, filament tape, covering, and standard R/C gear to
complete the kit. A mixing radio is preferred, but it can be set up with separate
aileron and elevator controls. Exponential is suggested.
